Who we are
The 1982 LAROUSSE Encyclopedic Dictionary says of Baptists:
"
“Baptist churches are characterized by their primary and unconditional commitment to Scripture, considered to be a fully inspired book… The teaching and testimony of Baptists therefore have a strong Biblical imprint… Everything is strongly rooted in a deep meditation on the person and work of CHRIST crucified and resurrected, the source in man of conversion and new birth, manifested in a continuous sanctification of one's entire existence.”
“It is Baptism by immersion that is the outward sign of this resurrection… This baptism can only be for a person who is capable of confessing their faith… No one can be a Christian simply by virtue of being born into a Christian family. Anyone can become one through the work of the Holy Spirit, creating faith and new life within them.”
“Baptists are Christians who believe in God the Father, in Jesus Christ his Son, in the Holy Spirit, and in the BIBLE.”

In its organization, the Baptist church maintains a scriptural Christianity that is Lay and Free, in contrast to the hierarchy of most other churches.
Far from being a cult, Baptists are simply Christians. They do not claim that salvation comes from their church, for salvation is the work of God alone. Nor do they claim to possess the truth to the exclusion of other churches: through the Bible, the truth is available to everyone. We are Christians not because we are blameless, nor through our membership in any church, but because of our reliance on Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, the Christian life begins with a birth and a second birth.
